Weekend Reading & Selected Links
Happy weekend! Here are some links to things I've been reading or watching that you might also enjoy:
1. CEO and cofounder of 80,000 Hours Ben Todd has shared his personal annual review process.
2. Somehow I missed this at the time: 'Rafael Nadal vs Roger Federer - Battle of Surfaces 2007'. Those are not special effects, it is an actual half grass, half clay court.
3. 'Creative blocks', a 2012 Aeon essay on artificial general intelligence by David Deutsch.
4. 'The 1968 Book That Tried to Predict the World of 2018', a 2018 New Yorker essay by Paul Collins. I recently bought the book the article is about, Toward the Year 2018. 'Past books about the future' has become a favourite genre of mine. Another cracker is the late MIT political economist Lester Thurow's Head to Head, a 1993 book which envisioned Japan and Europe as America's great economic rivals in the twenty-first century, scarcely making mention of China. But there are many others. Servan-Schreiber's The American Challenge, Kahn and Weiner's The Year 2000, Ehrlich's The Population Bomb, Friedman and Lebard's The Coming War With Japan.
Have a great weekend,
Joe
